Duotone Unit 2027: D/LAB vs SLS vs Original — Which One Should You Buy?

Duotone's Unit is the all-round wing in its range — the one that covers freeride, freestyle and waves rather than specialising in any of them. For 2027 it comes in three constructions, and because the shape is shared between them, choosing is less about "which is the best wing" and more about "how much of the difference will I feel on the water I actually ride, and what's that worth to me?"

What's new on every 2027 Unit

These changes apply to all three constructions:

• Shorter strut. Duotone has shortened the centre strut to make the wing more compact, with less swing weight. The stated aim is easier handling and smoother behaviour through gusts and lulls.
• New window layout. Repositioned windows for better visibility.
• Refined profile distribution. Less depth in the centre of the canopy and more towards the quarter span, for more efficient power delivery and better stability when the wing is flagged out.
• MOD3s canopy used across a higher proportion of the wing for draft stability and durability.
• Wide leading-edge handle for control when surfing with the wing flagged, and moulded mini batten pockets for canopy stability and longevity.
• Fusion boom or handle option. The wing is sold without a boom or handles; you choose which to add (see below).

Duotone lists optimised canopy tension and tip twist as a 2027 update on the D/LAB and SLS, described as giving a cleaner canopy, better draft stability and a more direct response.

Unit D/LAB — the lightest and stiffest

The D/LAB is the top of the range. Aluula Gold is the lightest and stiffest frame material Duotone uses, and the D/LAB is the only Unit with a thinner leading edge, so it's the most efficient of the three and the most direct in the hands. Duotone's own guidance is that the gains are "especially evident in medium to larger sizes, where reactivity and weight are substantial factors" — which is also why there's no D/LAB below 3.5 m.

Unit SLS — the middle ground

• Frame: PentaTX, 135 g/m², with an 82 g Aluula Gold centre panel
• Leading edge: same diameter as the Original
• Sizes: 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 m
• Colours: Off Green (C07), Light Lime (C04), and an undyed Concept Blue version (C03)
• Duotone's target rider: all riding levels / ambitious
• Available: September 2026

SLS stands for Strong Light Superior. The PentaTX frame is stiffer and lighter than the Dacron on the Original, and the Aluula centre panel adds stiffness where the loads are highest. Duotone describes the result as "additional grunt with improved low-end power and drive" and "a more direct connection and precise handling" compared with the Original. It keeps the Original's leading-edge diameter, so it's not as slippery as the D/LAB, but it's a clear step up in feel for a lot less money.

The Concept Blue version is the same wing built with undyed materials — Duotone's lower-impact construction line. Same performance, ordered as a colourway.

The Original is the same 2027 shape with the standard Dacron frame. It gets the shorter strut, the new window layout, the refined profile and the MOD3s canopy — everything on the "what's new" list above except the canopy tension and tip twist tuning. Duotone's own words: the Original offers "superior comfort due to the more forgiving flex properties of the inflated Dacron structure", and "it is by no means essential to have maximum fun while winging" to own the top construction. It's the wing most people should be looking at first.

Side-by-side comparison

The point most people miss: the wind ranges are identical across all three. A 5.0 D/LAB and a 5.0 Original are both rated 10–25 knots. A lighter, stiffer frame changes how efficiently the wing converts the wind it's got and how quickly it responds — it doesn't change the size you need. Buy the size the table below says, then pick the construction on feel and budget.

Wind range by size — all three constructions

These are Duotone's published figures. Your weight, board volume and foil size all move the real-world range by a knot or two either way. If you're between sizes, ring us with what you're riding and we'll tell you which way to go.

Which one for Whitstable and the north Kent coast?

This is our recommendation, not Duotone's. It's based on the specs above and the conditions we ride here — you can read more about those in our guide to The Street, Long Rock and Seasalter.

Start with the Original. A lot of rideable days on this coast come with gusty, up-and-down wind — anything with south in it is blowing off the land. Duotone's own line is that the Dacron frame's forgiving flex gives superior comfort in exactly those conditions. The Original has every 2027 shape change, it's £210–£330 cheaper than the SLS size for size, and if you're still progressing, our advice is to put that money towards the foil. The foil decides how early you fly and how it feels once you're up; the wing construction is a refinement on top of that.

Step up to the SLS if you already know you're hooked. The stiffer frame gives a more direct response and, in Duotone's words, more low-end drive. That's worth having on a marginal day at Seasalter when you're trying to get a 5.5 or 6.0 flying. It's also the only Unit you can have in the undyed Concept Blue version.

Go D/LAB if you'll use what it offers. Riding several times a week, chasing light wind on a 5.5 or 6.0, or doing freestyle where swing weight matters — that's where the full Aluula frame and thinner leading edge pay for themselves, and Duotone says as much about the bigger sizes. If that's not you, the SLS gives you most of the feel for a lot less. There's no D/LAB smaller than 3.5, so on the windiest days everyone's on an SLS or Original anyway.

Boom or handles?

The 2027 Unit is sold without a boom or handles. You add either the Fusion boom or Fusion handles (£85), and both attach to the same flush connection on the strut, so you can change your mind later without buying a new wing.

• Fusion boom: a single carbon bar you can hold anywhere along its length, which makes hand changes, gybes and flagging out simpler. Sizes: S (72 cm) for the 2.0, M (84 cm) for the 2.5 and 3.0, L (96 cm) for 3.5 to 6.5.
• Fusion handles: a front handle (M, 43 cm, for 2.5–3.0; L, 55 cm, for 3.5–6.5) and a rear handle (31 cm) that fits all sizes. Lighter, with fixed reference points some riders prefer.

If you're unsure, we'd suggest the boom — being able to slide your hands rather than reach for a handle is easier while you're learning the wing.

FAQ

What's the difference between the Duotone Unit D/LAB, SLS and Original?

The shape, sizes and wind ranges are the same. The difference is the frame: the D/LAB uses a full Aluula Gold frame (82 g/m²) with a reduced-diameter leading edge, the SLS uses a PentaTX frame (135 g/m²) with an Aluula Gold centre panel, and the Original uses Dacron. Lighter and stiffer frames give a more direct, more efficient wing; the Dacron frame is more forgiving in gusts and costs less.

Is the Duotone Unit D/LAB worth the extra money?

Duotone says the D/LAB's gains are most evident in medium to larger sizes, where weight and reactivity matter most. If you ride often, ride light wind, or ride 5.5 m and up, the difference is real. For a first wing or occasional use, the SLS or Original gives you most of the performance for much less.

Do the Unit D/LAB, SLS and Original have different wind ranges?

No. Each size has the same rated wind range in all three constructions — a 5.0 is 10–25 knots whichever you buy. The construction changes feel and efficiency, not the size you need.

Does the 2027 Duotone Unit come with a boom or handles?

No. The wing is sold without either. You add a Fusion boom or Fusion handles (£85), and both use the same connection so you can switch later.
