Stand-up paddle boarding.
Stand-up paddle boarding, or SUP, is the new sport of standing on a board and paddling about.
Types of paddle boards.
Paddle boards are usually made from an inflatable material and are very popular as family fun paddle boarding. If you need a board for racing or surfing the waves, look for a rigid board, usually made from glass fibre or carbon is better.
Types of Inflatable paddle boards.
The longer the paddle board, the more it will want to go in a straight line and not keep turning with each paddle stroke. A long paddleboard is often used for racing or cruising. A paddle board's longer water line length makes it faster across the water. The shorter the board you have, the more manoeuvrable it will be.
Width of a paddle board.
A paddle board with a width of thirty-four inches or more is very stable and ideal as a family paddle board or for the more significant person or a paddle boarder with poor balance.
The more common paddle board size is thirty-two inches wide. This size is a good compromise between speed and stability.
A thirty-inch wide board is considered more of a touring board, a little more unstable but a little quicker across the water.
Twenty-eight inches or smaller paddle boards are commonly considered to be race boards.
Why are some inflatable paddle boards so expensive?
From budget-friendly to premium, inflatable paddle boards come in a range of prices - from £100 to an eye-watering £1200. Constructed with two-plus layers fused together, the likes of Red Paddle Co and Sandbanks SUPs provide the utmost stiffness for optimal stability on the water whilst also boasting remarkable durability, so much so that these manufacturers offer five-year guarantees! But if you're just getting started or after something more affordable, look out for cheaper models that sacrifice performance due to their lightweight but flimsy construction.
SUP paddles are a crucial part of stand-up paddle boarding. A one-piece paddle is typically light and stiff, but two-pieces can be adjusted in length for riders of different heights to achieve versatility. However, if you're looking for ultimate convenience, three pieces may do the trick since they offer a compact size ideal for packing inside a bag!
Inflatable paddle board packages have become quite the hot commodity, with many high-quality bags featuring built-in wheels for easy transport. Despite their light weight on the water surface, each package – typically complete with a pump, paddleboard and all necessary accessories such as leashes - weighs up to 20 kilograms!
